Even the healthiest hair requires regular attention to look and behave its best. Whether your goal is to grow your hair longer or maintain a specific shape, the timing of your haircut is the most important factor in your hair care routine.
Why Prevention is Better Than a Cure
Hair does not only split when it is chemically damaged. Everyday mechanical stress causes wear and tear. Factors such as brushing, heat styling, weather exposure, and even the friction of your hair against your pillow or clothing contribute to fraying ends.
Once a hair strand begins to split, it cannot be permanently fused back together. If left too long, the split travels up the hair shaft, damaging healthy hair further up. Waiting too long between appointments often means we have to remove more length than you intended just to restore the hair’s structural integrity.
Recommended Frequencies by Hair Type
Every style and texture has a different “shelf life.” Here is a general guide to help you plan your studio visits:
- Short Hair and Precision Cuts: 4 to 6 weeks. Shorter styles lose their intended shape quickly as the hair grows and the weight shifts.
- Mid to Long Hair: 6 to 10 weeks. Regular trims keep the ends thick and prevent the “see-through” look that occurs when ends become thin and frayed.
- Curly or Textured Hair: 8 to 12 weeks. While curly hair can often hide growth better than straight hair, it is important to maintain the internal shape to prevent the hair from becoming bottom-heavy.
- Fringes and Layers: 3 to 4 weeks. These elements usually require a “tidy-up” sooner to keep the style from falling into your eyes or losing its lift.
As a general rule for most clients, an appointment every 8 to 12 weeks is the sweet spot. Going beyond three months usually means your hair has lost its professional shape and the ends have begun to deteriorate.
It Is Not Always About Length
A haircut does not have to be a dramatic transformation. Often, the most important appointments are about:
- Rebalancing the Shape: Moving the weight of the cut back to where it belongs for your face shape.
- Removing Fraying Ends: Taking off only the damaged tips to ensure the hair feels soft and tangles less.
- Improving Manageability: Healthy hair is easier to style and requires less heat to look good.
If you find that your hair is tangling more easily or simply will not sit correctly regardless of the products you use, that is your cue that it is time for a professional cut.
