Rethinking Grey: Why Full Coverage Isn’t Your Only Option

Grey hair is a natural evolution and a sign of experience. For many, the instinct is to immediately reach for permanent dye to erase it, but modern hairdressing offers far more sophisticated, and lower-maintenance, alternatives.

In my studio, I believe your hair should fit your lifestyle, not dictate your schedule. Here is how we can approach your greys, whether you want to hide them or celebrate them.

The Traditional Route: Permanent Full Coverage

If you prefer a uniform, polished look with no grey visible, permanent colour is the most effective choice. This process deeply deposits pigment into the hair shaft to fully mask every strand.

  • The Result: A solid, rich colour with 100% coverage.
  • The Commitment: Because the coverage is total, the regrowth line is quite sharp. To maintain this look, you will likely need a Root Tint Refresh every 4–6 weeks.
  • Best For: Those who want a high-definition, consistent shade and don’t mind regular studio visits.

The Modern Alternative: Grey Blending

Rather than erasing the grey, we can treat it as “natural highlights.” By using demi-permanent glazes or strategic highlighting techniques, we can soften the contrast between your natural base and your greys.

  • The Result: A multi-dimensional, shimmering effect where greys are “stained” with tone rather than being fully opaqued. This creates a soft, sun-kissed look.
  • The Commitment: This is a low-maintenance option. Because the regrowth line is diffused and soft, you can often wait 8–12 weeks between appointments.
  • Best For: Those who want a natural appearance, are new to grey coverage, or want to reduce their time in the salon chair.

Why I Recommend Blending

Many of my clients find that as their grey percentage increases, a softer approach actually looks more youthful.

  1. Skin Tone Synergy: As we age, our skin tone changes. A softer, blended colour is often more flattering against the complexion than a flat, solid dark shade.
  2. Hair Health: Demi-permanent colours are incredibly gentle. They boost shine and improve texture without the intensive chemical process of permanent dye.
  3. Flexibility: It is much easier to transition your look or experiment with different tones when you aren’t locked into a heavy, permanent pigment.

Your Hair, Your Choice

Grey hair isn’t a problem to be “fixed”, it is a feature to be managed in a way that makes you feel confident. During our consultation, we can look at your specific grey pattern and your lifestyle to decide whether a Full Head Tint Refresh or a Lived-in Colour approach is right for you.

My goal is to ensure your hair looks intentional on day one and remains beautiful as it grows out.
