Should Your Hair Be Clean or Dirty Before Your Colour Appointment?

This is one of the most frequent questions I receive, and there is a lot of conflicting advice available online. While the old salon rule was “the dirtier the better,” modern professional products have changed the requirements.

How you should prepare your hair depends entirely on the specific service you have booked. Here is a simple guide to ensure you get the best results from your visit.

For Most Colour Services: Clean Hair is Best

For the majority of my services—including Root Refreshes, Full Head Tints, and Balayage, I recommend arriving with clean hair.

I use COLOR.ME by KEVIN.MURPHY, which is a sophisticated, naturally derived range. These modern formulas are designed to work most effectively on a clean canvas. Arriving with hair washed either the day of or the day before your appointment offers several benefits:

  • Better Penetration: When hair is free from heavy oils and product build-up, the colour can penetrate the hair shaft more evenly.
  • Consistent Coverage: Products like dry shampoo, root-concealing sprays, or thick styling creams can create a barrier that hinders grey coverage.
  • True Results: Clean hair allows me to accurately assess your natural base shade and hair health, ensuring the final result is exactly as planned.

The Exception: Solid Bleach Applications

If you are booked for a Platinum Blonde or a Scalp Bleach (where the lightener is applied directly to the skin), I suggest skipping the wash for 24 to 48 hours beforehand.

In this specific instance, your natural scalp oils provide a light, protective barrier. This can help minimise any sensitivity or tingling during the lightening process. However, please ensure your hair is still free from heavy styling products or “root powders,” as these can interfere with the lift.

Pre-Appointment Checklist

To ensure your appointment runs smoothly and we achieve the best possible finish, please consider the following:

  • Avoid Heavy Products: Refrain from using excessive hairspray or wax in the days leading up to your colour.
  • Natural Texture: It is helpful if you arrive with your hair in its natural state rather than heavily straightened or curled, as this helps me see how the colour will sit with your natural movement.
  • Be Mindful of Minerals: If you live in a very hard-water area, a clarifying wash a few days before your appointment can help remove mineral build-up, giving us a “fresher” start.

If you are ever unsure how to prepare for your specific booking, please feel free to send me a quick message. I am always happy to advise on what will work best for your hair type and chosen service.
