If you are a new client or haven’t had a colour treatment with me within the last six months, a patch test is a mandatory requirement. This must be completed at least 48 hours before your appointment to ensure your service can proceed as planned.
While it may seem like an extra step, it is a vital part of maintaining a professional and responsible hairdressing service.
A Professional and Legal Standard
Patch testing is a legal requirement in the UK under Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act. As a professional, I have a duty of care to ensure that every service is carried out correctly and within the law.
Furthermore, a valid patch test is a strict condition of my professional indemnity insurance. Following these protocols is simply part of the “gold standard” of hairdressing that I uphold in my studio.
Why I Update Your Test Every 6 Months
Even if you have had your hair coloured for years, your body’s response to professional formulas can change over time. Rather than making assumptions, I maintain a 6-month update policy to ensure my records are always current and compliant.
A fresh patch test is required if:
- You are a new customer to my studio.
- It has been longer than 6 months since your last colour service with me.
- You have used home box dye or had a colour service at a different salon since I last saw you.
What to Expect During the Test
The process is quick and non-invasive, taking only a few minutes of your time:
- Application: I apply a small amount of the professional colour formula to a discreet area, typically behind the ear or in the crook of the arm.
- Observation: You simply leave the area undisturbed for 48 hours.
- Confirmation: Once the 48-hour window has passed, we are all set to proceed with your colour appointment.
Planning Your Visit
I understand your time is valuable, but I cannot waive this requirement under any circumstances; a signed waiver is not a legal substitute for a test. I recommend booking your consultation and patch test a few days before your desired colour date. This ensures everything is in order so that on the day of your appointment, we can focus entirely on achieving your hair goals.
