Why I Always Shampoo Your Hair Twice (and Why You Should Too)

Have you ever noticed that your hair feels a lot cleaner and stays bouncy for days longer after a visit to my studio? It is one of the most frequent comments I hear. The secret isn’t a magic potion or a hidden professional product; it is a simple technique that I use at the backwash every single time. I always shampoo twice.

While it might seem like a way to use more product, the “double cleanse” is actually the most effective way to maintain a healthy scalp and radiant hair. Here is why this method should be part of your hair care routine.

The First Wash: Breaking Down the Barrier

The primary reason your hair often feels heavy or greasy shortly after washing it at home is that one round of shampoo rarely finishes the job. Think of the first wash as the “prep” phase.

The initial application of shampoo works to loosen and lift stubborn surface debris. This includes:

  • Product Build-up: Residual hairsprays, serums, and dry shampoos.
  • Environmental Pollutants: This is especially vital if you live or work in highly populated, polluted areas like London, where microscopic soot and dust settle on the hair shaft.
  • Natural Oils: Excess sebum that has oxidised on the scalp.

During this first stage, you might notice the shampoo doesn’t lather very much. This is a sign that the formula is busy breaking through that initial layer of grime.

The Second Wash: The Deep Clean

Once the first rinse has carried away the surface dirt, the second shampoo can finally reach the scalp and the hair cuticle properly. Because the “barrier” is gone, you will find that the shampoo lathers much more easily the second time around.

This second pass is where the real magic happens. It completely rinses away any remaining impurities, ensuring the scalp is thoroughly invigorated. A truly clean scalp is the foundation for “happy hair.” When the follicles are free from debris, hair has more natural volume at the root and grows in a healthier environment.

Why Your Hair Stays Cleaner for Longer

The reason my clients find their hair doesn’t get greasy as quickly after an appointment is simple: I am actually getting the hair clean.

When you only wash once, you often leave behind a fine film of oil and product. This leftover residue acts like a magnet for new dirt and pollution, leading to that weighed-down, oily feeling within twenty-four hours. By double cleansing, you ensure that you are starting with a completely fresh canvas, allowing you to go longer between washes without sacrificing style.

My Top Tips for the Perfect Double Cleanse

  • Focus on the Scalp: Apply your shampoo directly to the roots and massage firmly. The mid-lengths and ends will be cleaned sufficiently as the suds rinse through them.
  • Use Less Product: You do not need a handful of shampoo for each wash. Two small, 10p-sized amounts are usually more than enough.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Spend extra time rinsing between the first and second wash to ensure all the loosened debris is moved along.

Next time you are in the shower, try the double wash. It is a small change to your routine that makes a massive difference to the health and longevity of your hairstyle.
