Conscious Hairdressing: My Commitment to a Low-Impact Studio

Interior of That German Hairdresser's private hair salon, showcasing the client area.

Sustainability is not a marketing catchphrase in my studio; it is the foundation of how I operate. I believe that providing a premium hairdressing experience should not come at an environmental cost. By re-evaluating every stage of the salon journey, I have implemented a range of conscious practices that go beyond industry standards.

A Studio Built with Purpose

My commitment to the planet began with the construction of the studio itself. Rather than a traditional build, I chose to rethink how a salon space should function:

  • The Container: The studio is housed within a repurposed shipping container, significantly reducing the environmental impact of traditional construction.
  • Biodegradable Flooring: I installed traditional linoleum made from linseed oil, a natural and biodegradable material that is both resilient and eco-friendly.
  • A Second Life for Furniture: Much of the studio’s interior was sourced sustainably through circular hubs, second-hand stores, and repurposed showroom pieces. Even the curtains are crafted from recycled PET bottles.

Resource Management and Renewable Power

Minimising the carbon footprint of the studio is an ongoing priority, from the energy we use to the water we save:

  • 100% Renewable Energy: The studio, including all professional equipment and the hosting for my website, is powered entirely by renewable sources like wind and solar power.
  • Water Conservation: I use Eco-Heads at the backwash, which improve water pressure while reducing water consumption by up to 65%.
  • Sustainable Textiles: I have replaced traditional cotton towels with Scrummi towels. These are made from 100% natural, compostable wood fibres from certified sustainable sources, eliminating the high energy and water costs of traditional laundering.

A Circular Approach to Waste

I operate on a circular economy model, ensuring that materials are reused or recycled whenever possible:

  • Specialist Recycling: Through partnerships with dedicated recycling services, I ensure that hair clippings, highlight foils, and colour tubes are diverted from landfill and repurposed.
  • Plastic-Free Innovation: I have eliminated single-use plastics from my services. In the rare instances where a disposable item is necessary, I use corn-based PLA, which is fully compostable.
  • Sustainable Gowns: Even the gowns used during your appointment are made from deadstock fabric that would have otherwise gone to waste.

Ethical Product Sourcing

I work exclusively with independent brands that mirror my values. I avoid major corporations in favour of partners who can prove their commitment to:

  • Cruelty-Free Formulas: PETA-certified products that are never tested on animals.
  • Ethical Business Practices: Brands that prioritise fair wages and responsible production.

My goal is to provide a beautiful, professional result that you can feel good about. By making these deliberate, grounded choices, I ensure that your hair care is as kind to the planet as it is to your hair.
