Ever wonder how to get those beautiful, effortless waves without putting any heat on your hair? It’s easier than you think and perfect for keeping your hair healthy. Forget the curling wands and straighteners; all you need is a little prep work and the right technique.

The Prep Work

Before you start, make sure your hair is almost completely dry—I’m talking about 95% dry. This is key to getting the best results. You can also mist your hair with a spray bottle to dampen it ever so slightly. The water helps break down the hydrogen bonds in your hair, making it malleable and ready to be shaped. Don’t worry, this is a completely natural and non-damaging process.

How to Do it

The Twist Method

For a modern, soft wave, the twist method will be your go-to:

  • First, part your hair as you normally would.
  • Then, divide your hair into two sections, one on each side.
  • Take the first section and twist it away from your face. It’s super important to twist outwards, as this creates a flattering, flowing wave.
  • Once you’ve twisted the whole section, secure it into a little twisted bun.
  • Repeat on the other side.

Leave the buns in until your hair is completely dry. You can do this before bed and wake up with beautiful waves, or let them set while you get ready for the day. Once you take them out, simply use your fingers to gently separate the waves and style them. Do not use a brush as this may cause they wave to look puffy.

The Braid Method

If you prefer a more bohemian or “mermaid” wave, braiding is the way to go. Just like with the twist method, start with your hair almost dry.

  • The number of braids you create will determine the final look.
  • The more braids you do and the smaller they are, the tighter and more defined your waves will be.
  • If you want a softer, looser wave, stick to two or three larger braids.

Leave the braids in until your hair is fully dry. When you take them out, you’ll have a gorgeous, natural-looking wavy texture.

Velcro Rollers

If you’re feeling a bit more advanced, you can also use big Velcro rollers. This technique is brilliant for creating a bouncy, more classic wave with lots of volume.

  • Once your hair is almost dry, simply section it and place the rollers.
  • For maximum root lift, it’s essential to put the rollers in at a 90-degree angle away from your head.
  • Once all the rollers are in place, a light mist of hairspray will help set everything and give you amazing volume at the roots.

Leave them in until your hair is fully dry before carefully unrolling them to reveal a beautiful, voluminous wave.

The Finishing Touch

Once you’ve released your waves, a great tip for a more “lived-in” look is to use a dry shampoo that also adds volume. It’s fantastic for giving your new waves some extra body and texture.

Both of these no-heat methods are perfect for getting stunning waves while protecting the health of your hair. Give them a try and you’ll see just how easy it is to achieve that effortless, wavy look without any damage.
