The small details matter just as much as the technique itself. That’s why every towel in my studio is from Scrummi, rather than the plastic-blend towels most salons still rely on.
Why Not Traditional Towels
Most salon towels are cotton, or cotton blended with synthetic fibre to resist staining. Cotton is one of the thirstiest crops in agriculture, needs heavy fertiliser and pesticides to grow, and the plastic content in blended towels sheds microplastics into the water supply every time it’s washed. On top of that, every wash cycle costs energy, water, chemicals and well, time.
Scrummi takes a different approach entirely. Their towels are made from 100% biodegradable plant fibres, sourced from responsibly managed European forests and FSC/PEFC certified. Every 1,000 towels soak up 39kg of CO2 as they grow, and delivery to the salon is CO2 neutral. Compared to cotton and microfibre towels, that adds up to 70 to 90% less energy and water use overall.
The embossed waffle texture also gives clients a genuinely luxurious, spa-like feel while absorbing moisture quickly and evenly.
Hygiene Without the Laundry
Every client gets a completely fresh towel, never one that’s been through a wash cycle with dozens of others before them. There’s no laundry pile, no detergent, and no towel slowly greying and thinning after months of colour services.
It’s not just better for clients, it’s a real time saving too, 31 hours back in 2025 alone, time that would otherwise have gone on washing, drying and folding.
That also means the “31 hours saved” bullet point later in the Certified section becomes slightly repetitive since it’s now mentioned twice. I’d cut it from the bulleted list at that point and let the four remaining figures (water, CO2, energy, money) carry that section, so the time-saving stat gets its own moment earlier rather than being buried in a list. No More Colour Stains
Alongside the towels, I use Scrummi’s hair colour removal wipes on every colour client. They’re infused with aloe and a blend of Dead Sea minerals, and they lift colour from skin around the hairline, ears and neck quickly and gently, without irritation, even on sensitive skin.
It means no client ever leaves my studio with a stained hairline.
Certified, Not Just claimed
Anyone can say they’re sustainable. I’d rather show you the numbers, independently verified, not written by me.
In 2025, my studio was named a Scrummi Sustainability Champion, certified against their Green Standard. Over the year, switching to Scrummi in my studio alone accounted for:
- 8,990 litres of water saved
- 775kg of CO2 reduction
- 542.5 kWh of energy saved
- 31 hours saved on laundry
- £775 saved in running costs
That’s not an industry estimate. That’s this studio, this year, verified.
It sits alongside the fact that Scrummi itself is B Corp certified, meaning the company is independently checked on how it runs the business, not just what it sells. Across the industry last year, they helped save more than 38 million litres of chemically contaminated water and cut 2,729 tons of CO2 emissions.
A Small Switch, A Real Difference
Using Scrummi has never meant changing a single thing about the service I offer. What it does change is everything that happens after, less waste, less laundry, and a completely fresh, plastic-free towel for every single client.
