A toner is probably one of the most misunderstood services in hairdressing.
Put simply, a toner adjusts the tone of your hair colour.
I often describe it as a filter for your hair. It doesn’t change the underlying colour, but it can change how that colour appears.
If your blonde has become too warm, too yellow or a bit brassy, a toner can help neutralise those unwanted tones. If your colour is already in a good place, a toner can enhance what’s there, adding richness, softness or shine.
What a toner won’t do is make your hair lighter. That’s a common misconception. Instead, it refines the colour that’s already there.
Before applying a toner, we’ll discuss what’s bothering you about your current colour and what you’re hoping to achieve.
Sometimes a toner is exactly what’s needed.
Sometimes the answer is something else entirely.
If it’s the latter, I’ll tell you.
